THE STOCK MARKET

Most nations have a stock market, and each is regulated by a local financial regulator or monetary authority, or institute. The SEC is the regulatory body charged with overseeing the U.S. stock market. Companies listed on the stock market exchanges are regulated, and their dealings are monitored by the SEC. In addition, the exchanges also set certain requirements such as mandatory timely filing of quarterly financial reports and instant reporting of relevant corporate developments, to ensure that all market participants are equally informed.

The Stock Trading

Stock trading involves buying and selling shares in publicly traded companies. In the United States, this typically occurs on stock exchanges like the Nasdaq Stock Market or the New York Stock Exchange NYSE. The value of the shares depends on a variety of factors, including the company’s financial performance, outlook, overall market conditions, and investor sentiment.

The Market Size

The total market capitalization of all publicly traded securities worldwide rose to US$93.7 trillion at the end of 2020. As of 2016, there are 60 stock exchanges in the world. Of these, there are 16 exchanges with a market capitalization of $1 trillion or more, and they account for 87% of global market capitalization. Apart from the Australian Securities Exchange, these 16 exchanges are all in North America, Europe, or Asia. The largest stock markets as of January 2022 are in the United States of America (about 59.9%), followed by Japan (about 6.2%) and United Kingdom (about 3.9%).

Market Focus

We focus on stocks currently trading on the NASDAQ markets. NASDAQ is an electronic stock exchange where investors can buy and sell on an automatic computer network. More than 3,300 companies now trade publicly on the NASDAQ exchange, and it is the second-largest stock exchange in terms of securities’ values and the largest electronic stock market. The NASDAQ trades shares in several different types of companies – including capital goods, consumer durables and nondurables, energy, finance, healthcare, public utilities, technology, and transportation – but it is well-known for its high-tech stocks.
